This amazing page has incredible information on seam construction and edge finishes from European extant garments.  I suspect that many of these were used also in the East, but more research is needed to be sure.

Freer Sackler Galleries in Washington, D.C.  I've been able to visit the galleries several times, it is world class.

www.metmuseum.org I have spent many happy and productive hours here, too, including an appointment with the textile department.

Even if you have no desire to reel your own silk, this website is worth your time.  I may never actually reel silk (though spinning it is glorious!) but I learned a huge amount from this website and it makes the technical details of historical textile study much easier to wrap my brain around.  And the moths themselves are surprisingly beautiful.
